History of the Parish of Skreen and Dromard

Skreen and Dromard were originally two parishes and were united in as one parish in 1849.
Skreen (Scrin) meaning shrine takes its name from the Church of St Adamnan (Eunan) in the 7th century. St Adamnan (Eunan) was abbot of Iona and wrote the life of St Colmcille.

St Adamnan's Church, Skreen was built in 1863 by Fr Hugh Conway, Parish Priest,
on the site of a previous church. Fr Hugh Conway was parish priest from 1848 to 1872
when he became Bishop of Killala diocese. Major repairs were carried out in 1920,
in 1964 and again in 1988 with a new heating system and car park.
The Church was completely renovated with a new roof amd windows in 2004.
St Mary's Cemetery, Skreen was opened in 1930. Before that Skreen Church of Ireland
cemetery was used by both Church of Ireland and catholics.
The present Parochial house was built in 1884.

Dromard takes its name from the ridge in the graveyard where the old Church was built.
The present Ss Peter and Paul Church was built in 1828 by Fr Peter Dowdican, Parish Priest.
It replaced an older Church built around 1731, the remains of which can still be seen nearby.
In 1938, the Church was extended with a choir gallery and porch added. Major repairs to the roof were completed in 1960 and a new porch and confessional room were added in 1990.
In 2000 the car park was extended and the Church interior painted with new carpets on floor and sanctuary.
A new cemetery beside Dromard Church was completed and consecrated in 2014.

There are two Church of Ireland Churches, Christ Church Dromard built in 1764 and Skreen Parish Church built in 1818.

There are two national schools in the parish, Ball;inlig NS and High Park NS.
School that have closed over the past include, Tubberunane, Ballycatranta,

Doonflinn, Ross and Skreen Church of Ireland School.

Halloween, comes from the early name for Nov 1, All Hallow’s Day.
This Holy Day remembers the Saints that are not honoured with a Feast Day. In the Celtic tradition Oíche Shamhna, was one of their four sacred feasts, remembering spirits of the dead. Our dead are part of the Communion of Saints and in November we particularly remember them.
